RADON EDUCATION

& TESTING

The Darke County Health Department provides services to the public to prevent cancer due to the exposure of radon gas within the home.  Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas, and is second only to cigarette smoking in causing lung cancer. The program involved the distribution of test kits and educational materials on radon. The program is collaboration between the Darke County Health Department and the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency (RAPCA) to promote radon awareness.  It is funded through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health.  (Picture of Corrie Holthaus, RS, Radon Educator)

FREE RADON KITS AVAILABLE FOR DARKE COUNTY RESIDENTS

GREENVILLE - January is National Radon Action Month and you can participate by testing your home for radon gas.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that enters homes through cracks and holes in the foundation and can accumulate in indoor environments. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends all homes be tested for radon, which is colorless, odorless and tasteless. While exposure to elevated levels can increase one’s risk for developing lung cancer, homeowners can reduce their exposure by testing their homes and taking appropriate actions to reduce elevated levels.  Radon problems can be fixed, but the only way to know if elevated levels exist in your home is to test.

For more information on how to obtain a test kit, contact Corrie Holthaus at the Darke County Health Department 937-548-4196, extension 205. Or, visit the following websites.
